Taking a break from your day-to-day life and planning a vacation is an exciting experience. It's an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle and take some time for yourself or your family.

Your head may be in the clouds as you think about all the fun and relaxation you will have on your trip. However, as deflating as it may be to think about, there are things that could go wrong while you're away on vacation.

Many people instantly think of something such as rental car insurance when they are traveling. But that coverage only extends to the vehicle you are borrowing. How can you cover other things, such as valuable items and even your own health?

Your answer lies with travel insurance. This coverage will keep you protected as you embark on your next adventure, so you can relax without fear.

Why You Should Get Travel Insurance Before Your Next Vacation

What is travel insurance?

Think of travel insurance as a security net for your next vacation. There are many problems that could potentially occur, and with travel insurance, you will be able to receive reimbursement for them.

There are different coverage options to choose from, so you are able to find a plan that fits your needs, budget, and trip.

Travel insurance is a great idea for both domestic and international travel.

What Travel Insurance Covers

What you will need from your travel insurance may depend on the vacation you are planning. There is a large list of instances that can be covered under your plan. Each plan will have its own pricing and coverage. However, these are general options that will typically be covered.

Medical Coverage

It can be a scary thought, but it is possible you or a family member may suffer an injury while on vacation. This can be a difficult experience since you are in a new place, unfamiliar with the area, and possibly even in a foreign country.

Some travel insurance policies will assist you in finding medical facilities and cover transportation costs, and if you are in a foreign country you may be provided translation services.

You may also be covered by your travel insurance up to a certain amount for your medical costs. The coverage amount will be provided when you purchase and is extremely handy to have in the case of a medical emergency while traveling.

If you have pre-existing conditions, be sure to see if they are covered under the policy you have chosen. Coverage options differ, and it is important to find out what your policy covers before you actually embark on your journey.

You should also be sure to check with your personal health insurance provider before leaving to confirm you can receive coverage where you are traveling. Some companies may need advance notice for use outside your normal coverage area-especially for international travel.

Personal Items

When you are traveling, there may be some items you can't leave behind or simply don't want to. Electronics, jewelry, or even your luggage itself may have a high monetary value.

It is not uncommon for luggage to be lost or stolen while traveling. The items you brought along for your trip may be expensive to replace should you have to.

If you are a travel insurance plan holder, your belongings will be covered under your plan. Be sure to document all your items before traveling so you know you will be covered should anything happen. Your travel insurance provider may request an itemized list of your lost or stolen belongings.

Your plan may also allow you funds to purchase new clothing items and toiletries for your trip if your luggage is lost or stolen. This can save a massive headache of worrying about the extra money you will have to spend to replace all your items and allow you to continue traveling with ease.

Each coverage plan may differ in their coverage amount and their requirements. Be sure to check your plan options carefully and choose one that provides you with the coverage you need.

Cancellations and Delays

Unforeseen circumstances can always happen when preparing to travel. Perhaps something changed at work and you are now unable to take off your original vacation days. You may have contracted an illness that leaves you unable to travel. There may have been a sudden death within your family. Or it's even possible the weather conditions make traveling unsafe.

All of these instances could occur, and the last thing you want to deal with is a non-refundable vacation you can't even go on.

That is where travel insurance comes in. You can receive reimbursement for your vacation if you are unable to go.

Keep in mind, however, that this only applies to legitimate reasons for the trip being canceled. You cannot simply use it because you don't want to go anymore.

Parts of your trip may already be able to be refunded, but your travel insurance can make up the difference for what is not able to be refunded to you. If your trip is expensive, this can be extremely relieving knowing you will not lose a large amount of money.

This can also be handy for possible travel delays. When it comes to flying, there are many reasons airlines can run behind. With travel insurance, you may be compensated for an overnight stay if it is necessary.

Each travel insurance policy may differ, and it is important to check what is covered by your policy before leaving for your trip.

Where to get travel insurance?

There are multiple sources to choose from if you have decided travel insurance is the right option for you.

Start by looking online. Typically, you can find coverage options with just a quick search. You may also purchase through a travel agency. They will typically have options available and be able to answer most questions you may have.

Just be sure to find a policy that works for you and your vacation, and you're set to go.

Travel Insurance: A Good Backup Plan

Everyone who takes a vacation wants it to be laid back and stress free. Unfortunately, this won't always be the case.

Even with all the planning and preparation, many things can happen that you didn't plan for. Travel insurance is a great way to ensure even if things go wrong, you have a backup plan in place to keep you covered and help if needed.
