Traveling alone can be different than going with friends or family. Well, MASSIVELY different!

More often than not, traveling solo is less complicated. You can go through your solitary routine without judgment. You can eat alone, drink alone and well, see a movie alone!

However, there are things you need to consider and do when traveling alone. After all, it can also be scary from time to time.

Here at Travelers Today, we compile six things you might want to do before and while solo backpacking.

1. Buy Travel Insurance.

Of course, safety first! It may pay to be cautious, but it shouldn't stop you. Travel insurance will also provide peace of mind for your family and friends on your whereabouts.

It will also be better for you to check for advisories, prepare emergency numbers and contact lists, and have a list of medical allergies to make sure you are prepared for anything.

2. Learn the Local Language and Talk to the Locals

Aside from smiling to make you approachable and kind, make an effort to learn phrases in the native tongue.

You can ask a stranger just about anything. Strangers are often willing to give you helpful answers about things to do and places to see. It also helps to get a conversation going over a meal or party with a local.

However, if you find it hard, taking note of simple phrases such as hello, thank you, excuse me, sorry and please is a good start. After all, those can serve as conversation starters.

3. Travel During the Day When Possible.

Remember: you're alone. With that said, you need to be more vigilant since more accidents happen at night. For long periods of traveling, travel during the day.

Also, try looking for a private cabin or couchette that can be locked and use trusted transportation.

4. Stay in Touch via Social Media.

Oh, the benefits of social media! It helps you stay connected wherever you are.

Let people know when and where you will be traveling for assurance. While you don't have to constantly update your family and friends, it won't harm you to let them know that you are safe and enjoying yourself.

You can also stay in contact with fellow travelers through social media platforms, which is a great way to connect and make friends.

5. Be Cautious with Your Possessions.

Sure, this can happen even when you are not alone. Nonetheless, solo travelers could be targeted more.

Moreover, your gadgets will be attractive items to thieves. Avoid flashing them around and keep them within reach at all times, along with your wallet, IDs, money and credit cards.

Ensure your handbag is closed without any zips facing forward. When in crowds, have your bags in front of you -- not on your back. Don't put your valuables in your back pocket because experienced pickpockets will be able to snatch them easily.

These tips aren't meant to scare you at all. You deserve to enjoy every bit of your solo travel. However, as when traveling with other people, there are things that you need to consider.

Have a safe trip!
