If you're like most people and want to land a lucrative job in the US, you better brush up on your science and consider a job in the medical field. A recent study revealed that medical professions make the highest-paying jobs in the US, with the Anesthesiologist at the very top of the list.

According to Business Insider, the list is based off May 2016 salary and employment data. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates survey revealed that the profession of an Anesthesiologist is the highest-paying job in 17 US states. This includes California, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Washington D.C.

The second highest-paying job in the US is that of a Surgeon. It's the top-paying profession in states like Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and South Carolina. The profession of an Orthodontist comes next followed by General Pediatrician and Obstetrician and Gynecologist.

Other medical professions that made it to the list of the highest-paying jobs in the US are that of a General Internist, Oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Podiatrist. Kansas gives the highest rate with an annual pay of $287,410 for the state's highest-paying job of an Anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologists in Washington D.C., meanwhile, get the lowest annual pay in the list of the highest-paying jobs in the US with $212,280.

That's still way bigger than what a Retail salesperson in the US gets. According to Business Insider, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates also conducted a survey on millions of businesses in the US. At least 4,612,510 people in the US work as a Retail salesperson. It's far from being one of the highest-paying jobs in the US with an average annual pay of $26,340.
