"Sherlock" has finally ended and fans of Benedict Cumberbatch will not be waiting too long until he appears again on the big screen. The versatile actor has a new show and it will air later this year.

His role is no longer a detective but a playboy. The television series will be written by David Nicholls. It will be based on Edward St. Aubyn's semi-autobiographical "Patrick Melrose" novels.

Sky Atlanta's "Melrose" is a dream-come-true for Cumberbatch according to Huffington Post. In 2013, he revealed during a Reddit AMA that he wanted to play the role of Melrose.

Sky Atlanta will make the series as a "true television saga, both gripping and humorous." Nicholls said that he has been an admirer of St. Aubyn's novels for a long time and he is excited to bring the stories in the screens. He also said that Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect actor to play the role of Patrick Melrose.

The role is a refreshing one for the "Sherlock" actor because he will be playing the role of a funny playboy. The St. Aubyn's collection of novels had its first one published in 1992 and the last one was published in 2012.

David Nicholls was commissioned to write five episodes according to BBC. The setting will be the 1960's France, 1980's New York, and the 2000's Britain. The story will follow the journey of the main character from his dark childhood days through his adulthood that he lived in bondage to substance abuse. But his is a story of hope as he ultimately recovered in the end. It is a timely story that can inspire those who have struggles in life.

The series has Cumberbatch as both actor and executive producer. Adam Ackland is also into production. Filming is will start in July.
