Mel Gibson could soon be joining the cast of the DC extended universe as a director. Reports have been coming in saying Warner Bros. has been courting Gibson to direct "Suicide Squad 2."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both sides are in early talks and Gibson is currently familiarizing himself with the "Suicide Squad" material. However, the studio is not being passive and is also actively looking at other potential directors for the sequel, and Daniel Espinosa is reportedly one of them.

The initial film was directed by David Ayers and featured an ensemble cast that included the likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto as The Joker. The first "Suicide Squad" movie experienced several challenges during its production and was met with mixed reviews from critics and fans, but still managed to gross $745 million in the global box office, which was enough to warrant a sequel for the film.

Ayer is currently focusing on "Gotham City Sirens", a project that focuses on the DC Universe's female villains and reunites him with Margot Robbie who played Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad." The first film told the stories of villains such as the aforementioned Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and The Joker who are forced to serve the government in exchange for lighter prison sentences.

Gibson is currently riding high thanks to the success of his most recent film, "Hacksaw Ridge", which received several Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. The fact that Warner Bros. is approaching him for the possibility of directing the second "Suicide Squad" movie is a major turnaround after his career was derailed after a recording of the actor-director going on a racially charged went viral in 2010.

According to the Guardian, Gibson will be joining Mark Wahlberg and comedian Will Ferrell for the sequel to "Daddy's Home." He is also working together with Vince Vaugh on a crime-thriller about corruption in the police force.
