A new animated series based on the popular video game series "Castlevania" will be premiering next year on Netflix. This will mark the first time a series based on a video game will premiere on the popular online streaming service.

In an interview with IGN, producer Adi Shankar says that the series will be "Castlevania done in the vein of Game of Thrones. " He also added that the series will be R-rated, so it is definitely not something you'd let your kids watch. Shankar did not drop too many details about the show, but mentioned that the story will be based on "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse." This means everyone's favorite vampire hunter, Trevor Belmont, will most likely be the show's main star. Fans are also speculating Simon Belmont and Dracula's son, Alucard, could be in the show as well.

Shankar also made a pretty bold statement on his Facebook page regarding the quality of the show. In the post, the producer guaranteed that the upcoming animated series would "end the streak and be the western world's first good video game adaptation." He also added that season 1 would be premiering this year, while season 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2018.

Netflix recently released a press release confirming that the show's first season will indeed be premiering sometime in 2017. This is the only information about the show that has been made available by Netflix. It is still unknown whether or not this is the project that Fredator Studio's Fred Seibert was referring to during an episode of the Nick Animation Podcast.

In the said podcast, Seibert mentioned that he and his team were going to be working on a project based on "one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years." He also mentioned that Fredarator Networks had already secured the rights to adapt this video game for the last 12 years. According to a report from the Globe and Mail, Warren Ellis, one of the most renowned comic book writers in the world, has written for the show's first season. He is known for his dark writing style, which is something that will suit the animated "Castlevania" series well.
