That was the "Jane the Virgin" episode that no one saw coming. In what is arguably the show's most surprising episode yet, "Chapter Fifty Four" shows the death of a beloved character. Spoilers ahead, be warned.

Viewers witnessed a heart-wrenching twist. Immediately after Michael's (Brett Dier) wedding to Jane (Gina Rodriguez), he got shot, and a lot of people assumed he would eventually recover, because the premiere for Season 3 showed him appearing to be moving on with his life, The Hollywood Reporter said. He and Jane even went back to the spot where they first dated and talked about having a baby together.

But everything came to a halt when, just moments after taking the LSAT, Michael died because of a dissection from his gunshot wound. After that, fans witnessed Jane trying to take in the shocking news, and the scene turned black and picked up three years later. Now everyone wants to know, why did that show have to kill off Michael?

According to E! News, Jenni Urman, executive producer of "Jane the Virgin" addressed this tragic twist. She said that it was a decision that they made "very early on." She acknowledged that fact that it was a very hard thing to do because even back then, the writers could see Jane and Michael's magic together. She added that Dier's character was intended to die earlier, but his performance kept writers changing things up.

Urman also clarified why the "Jane the Virgin" jumped three years after. The reason is because there could be flashbacks to fill in the gaps in order to show the emotional impact. She added that they're glad that Jane's firsts (sex, moving into a new home, marriage) were all with Michael. "Michael will be missed in Jane's world, just as Brett is already missed in ours," Urman said.
