"Vikings" season 4 finale has faced a big death ending. Viewers saw the rising of generation of "Vikings" battling the forces of Wessex while at the same time, seeking for vengeance for the death of the great King Ragnar Lothbok.

The creator of the series, Michael Hirst, talks about the passing of certain defining characters. According to Hirst, it has been a monumental season for them in the sense that the show loses both Ragnar and Ecbert. These two characters were apparently among the massive roles of the series. Their stories were intertwined and on the other hand were very different.

The creator added that Ragnar and Ecbert's character were almost the same and they were finding out what has been common with the two of them, Entertainment Weekly reported. In some other ways, the episode had marked an endpoint of the story which goes all the way back to the season 2.

Viewers had seen Ecbert die by his own hand in the recent episode. He has been known to be cultured, and a sophisticated mirror image of Ragnar. Thus, according to Hirst, he was blessed to have Linus Roache and was able to develop the character with him.

On the other hand, Ragnar's death was horrifying and cruel. However, it was hugely symbolic and was filled with meaning and spirituality. Ragnar was seen to never give in and perhaps, Ecbert's death was much more low-key. He prefers dying as to how Romans would have to die.

Nevertheless, the deaths of these characters were not grand in the same way. But, it is more about the death of any man, wherein up to the end is still plotting and scheming. The "Viking" society is all about winning and being famous. It is very aggressive and ambitious and the kind where they're going to be conflict with each other, Variety reported.
