Executive producer Alex Gansa once said that their biggest concern with "Homeland" following the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections was trying to see whether or not could the show could dramatize anything as "scary as what's going on in the real world." The Showtime series is already in its sixth season and its premiere episode has aired in the age of Donald Trump, so it is understandable why Gansa had these concerns for the show.

Season 5 saw the award-winning show set in Berlin and paralleled the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris which left more than 130 people dead. Season 6 sees the show return to the homeland, aka The United States of America. However, this America is dealing with some internal struggles of its own.

The debut episode for season 6, "Fair Game", has been written by Ted Mann and Alex Gansa, and sees former CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) now working for a private foundation that helps Muslim-Americans. Meanwhile, her former co-workers are busy dealing with a presidential transition that Deadline describes as being "unorthodox", and a female President-elect who does not seem to trust the intelligence community.

Carrie seems to be happy with her new job helping protect Muslim-Americans from being discrimination and she also has her daughter, Frannie, to keep her company. However, Otto During (Sebastian Koch) calls her new line of work "small potatoes" giving viewers some sort of hint that it won't be long before Carrie is back doing what she does best.

According to The Independent, there is good reason to believe this will be happening soon as the writing is already on the wall. The current story takes place exactly 72 days between the presidential elections and inauguration. Carrie's new job also has her crossing paths with a young Muslim-American named Sekou Bah Jr. (J. Mallory McCree) who has been arrested for posting videos on the internet chronicling various terrorist attacks from the past.

The young Muslim has also been found to have booked a flight to Nigeria and has about $5000 to his name. Agent Conlin (Dominic Fumusa) tells Carrie he is not willing to take chances with Sekou, especially in New York.
