The movie "Series of Unfortunate Events" came out in 2004, and it starred Jim Carrey as Count Olaf.  Now, Netflix will bring a TV adaptation, and this time, the cruel villain will be played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Lemony Snicket (author Daniel Handler's pen name) penned "A Series of Unfortunate Events" follows the lives of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire after their parents died in a fire. They are placed in the custody of a villainous relative, Count Olaf, who would attempt to steal their inheritance.

According to People, Netflix's version keeps some of the movie's style, but it has the advantage of being able to indulge in endless twists over its eight episodes. The TV version's first season will cover the first four books: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window, and The Miserable Mill.

The 14-year-old Violet will be played by Malina Wiessman; Louis Hynes will star as 12-year-old Klaus; and Presley Smith be baby sister Sunny. Harris said that his character is a horrible person.  "It's interesting for me as an actor. You kind of want to choose a role and then have the good and the bad and figure out the inner conflict. Not so much with Count Olaf, and that's fun for me," he said.

The show's opening credits features Neil Patrick Harris singing and warn viewers to "look away".  According to The Atlantic, Netflix makes an impressive effort to stay true to the book's spirit and idiosyncrasies.  It could be because Handler is the show's writer and executive producer.

Each of the season's episodes will roughly be 45 minutes long.  The fictional Lemony Snicket will be played by Patrick Warburton, and he will be the omnipresent narrator.  "A Series of Unfortunate Events" will be available for streaming on Friday on Netflix.
