Not all cities are the same, as the more seasoned tourists are aware and conscious of scams that usually victimizes travelers. Bangkok in Thailand is one place to be careful of because there are many tourists there. This becomes an opportunity for those with crooked intentions. It therefore pays to be aware and careful. These are some of the most common scams in Bangkok, Thailand that preys on tourists:

If you are not an expert on gems, then we strongly suggest you to be careful of the Thai Gem Scam. Do not take the word of other people on how much money you can make if you sell these gems on return to your own country. People have lost a lot of money there. Do not make the mistake that you are different from the other victims.

The Grand Palace scam can happen near any tourist attraction, but happens mostly outside the Grand Palace. As you approach, someone will tell you that the Grand Palace is closed for various reasons. Ignore them as you will end up in either a gem store or a tailor shop.

Many people in Phuket and Pattaya are being scammed after renting Jet Skis. When you come back after renting it, they will point out scratches and dents in the jet ski and they will demand you to pay for damages. What they will not say is that other customers have already paid for those scratches. If you rent anything, be it jet ski, motorcycle or car, make sure to first document all scratches and dents.

The Bar/Café Scam is perpetrated by young, local girls. They target single male travelers by approaching them and getting them to go to a local bar or café. They get you to buy drinks and by the time the bill comes, they will be gone. Then when you get your bill, you will be shocked of the amount you have to pay.

Always remember, most scammers are successful because they play on the greed of their victims. If something is too good to be true, then it probably is. Thai people are generally kind and shy. If you are approached by a well-spoken Thai person on the street, then the chances are high that this person is a scammer. Of course, this does not apply to all. One must be able to discern and be careful.
