A biopic about the life of astronaut Neil A. Armstrong is in the making and Ryan Gosling is to portray the young Armstrong. The biopic will be titled "First Man" and would be based on James Hansen's book. "First Man" would be Gosling's second movie under the direction of Damien Chazelle.

Chazelle was the director for "La La Land" which is a story of a musician (Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) falling in love with each other. Chazelle also wrote and directed the critically-acclaimed film "Whiplash" where he received an Oscar nomination for writing.

According to Rolling Stone, Gosling had been tied to the project for around a year, but officially accepted it this month. As soon as Gosling finishes with "Blade Runner 2049", he would then be occupied with filming scenes for "First Man".

There were talks of the film as early as 2015, but no production company was officially backing it. The success of "La La Land" helped boost confidence towards Chazelle and Gosling, giving "First Man" support from Universal Pictures.

Earlier screenplay for "First Man" was written by Nicole Perlman. She wrote for "Guardians of the Galaxy" alongside James Gunn, and is also announced to write for "Captain Marvel" and "Black Widow".

Den of Geek also stated that Oscar-winner Josh Singer would be writing for the upcoming film. Singer is known for producing "Fringe", and writing for "West Wing", but his Oscar win came from his screenplay for "Spotlight".

The movie would focus on Armstrong's career towards being an astronaut for NASA, along with his struggles. It would also feature the cost and sacrifice required from a country to put a man on the moon.

Gosling and Chazelle's pairing is expected to deliver the level of sensibility and respect for such a relevant biopic. Backed with the writing of Perlman and Singer, it is easy to see "First Man" meeting up to its expectations.
