One of the year's most anticipated movies is "Assassin's Creed". This movie would be based on Ubisoft's popular franchise of the same name and was released on December 21, 2016.

The first game of the "Assassin's Creed" franchise was first released on November 13, 2007. Between its first release and up to February 9, 2016, the series has produced 13 games altogether.

According to Den of Geek "Assassin's Creed" is based on a character who is a descendant to an assassin. The main character can sync his consciousness to the past and experience it himself. The main character is tasked to do certain missions in an attempt to retrieve pieces of an artifact that can control human beings.

The movie is based on the concept of the game, but the characters and the plot are different altogether. Given the track record of movies adapted from video games, fans thought it was looking grim.

Previous video game adaptations usually had bad acting, and fans feared the same. But as fans saw Michael Fassbender in costume, they were optimistic.

Part of the ensemble cast Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons, along with another Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard. The movie also had a $125 million production budget with a director inclined to practical effects over computer generated ones.

However, during its opening week, it only grossed around $36 million. Though the $36 million was still high, it was still far from the expected target. Especially when compared to the $76.7 million gross for a $75 million production budget of "Sing" according to Cinema Blend.

"Assassin's Creed" trails behind expected box office hits like "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", "Sing" and "Passengers". However, the studio expects it to perform well internationally.

Given the film's serious tone and a PG-13 rating, Fox's domestic distribution chief noted that it would have a great global resonance. Though the film was not a huge disappointment to its fans, it also wasn't well received critically.
