"Pokemon Go" was very popular, and Nintendo hoped they could match that by releasing "Super Mario Run."  There were high hopes for the new game, but critics say it is actually a disappointment. The game's hefty price tag may be to blame.

AZ Daily Sun reported that the problem is not with the game's quality or design. As a matter of fact, both are top notch but the elements of the classic Mario game are not enough to satisfy old-school fans.

Nintendo's shares increased at the prospect of a new iPhone game centered around the company's most famous character. But when the game was finally released on December 15, shares sunk due to bad reviews.

Quartz reported that the game is currently the number 1 most-downloaded app on Apple's App Store, with estimates suggesting it has been downloaded about 10 million times. But, on the US App Store, the game has more one-star reviews than any other rating, with many customers voicing frustration with the game's cost structure.

"Super Mario Run" is free to download with 24 available worlds, but players need to pay $10 to unlock the full version of the game.  Although most critics blame the game's price which they say is expensive, others complain the internet requirement to play the game.

Before the game's release, the developers already explained why there is a price tag to it, and they say it is to avoid dinging players with additional, frequent charges as they played.  Nintendo designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, said in a previous interview:  "We're not going to continue to release little packets of additional content that people will have to pay for."

The game already has about 50,000 user reviews, and most of them only gave one star, Forbes reported.  "Super Mario Run's" average consumer rating on iTunes is 2.5 stars out of 5.
