BBC Music Awards 2016 was held at London's ExCel Centre on Monday, December 12. Adele arose to be the big winner of the night by beating other big names in two major categories. She won the Radio 2's Album of the Year for 25 and awarded the Song of the Year for her single Hello. The British singer wasn't able to accept her recognition personally due to her current world tour.

She was quoted in a statement read by Robbie Williams, "I'm so sorry I'm not there. I'll be home soon and I can't wait. It's been a long year on the road and this makes me feel a little less homesick -- I can't wait for Wembley and then to get back to normal."

Other major winner is the rock band Coldplay. They won the sought-after title British Artist of the Year beating the late iconic singer-songwriter David Bowie. Coldplay is a British rock band that popularized songs such as Scientist, Viva La Vida and Yellow. Same as Adele, they were not able to get their award on stage because of their ongoing concert.

They said in a video message, "We just got told about winning this beautiful BBC Artist of the Year award. Sorry we're not there, we are about to go on stage in Australia. Look at all those people and we love you and we are so grateful and we'll see you so soon. Thank you so much and goodbye."

However, some fans were not happy about Coldplay's winning over Bowie. Twitter was bombarded with messages of disapproval right after the announcement. One said, "Glad I didn't bother watching the BBC Music Awards as any award which votes Coldplay as better than Bowie is not a real award." Another Team Bowie commented, "Sorry but Coldplay winning a music award over Bowie? That's like switching your wonder mop for a damp cloth." The famous singer passed away in January at the age of 69.

The event was hosted by Fearne Cotton, Claudia Winkleman and Gemma Cairney. Other awards are BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance Of The Year that went to The 1975 for the "What Makes You Beautiful" (One Direction cover) and Introducing Artist of the Year is Izzy Bizu. Kaiser Chiefs, Robbie Williams and Craig David graced the event and performed live.
