From the 3D one, Instagram now introduces a simplified logo design. On May 11, Instagram announces on their blog that they have also updated the icons of their creative applications: Boomerang, Hyperlapse and Layout. The simplified Instagram logo is a sunset-colored gradient design.

The previous design is a retro-looking camera. It is one of the recognizable logos in the world, which is why supporters are asking whether the change is needed. Head design Ian Spalter explains the reason of change on Medium, with a short introductory film.

The challenge was to "honor Instagram's identity while reflecting its growth", Spalter says. "With this insight, we decided to translate these elements into a more modern app icon that strikes a balance between recognition and versatility."

Users are divided in their opinions though.

Twitter user @zzarrillo said, "... the new Instagram logo is a... disaster". @TonyRomm claims that "the new Instagram logo is gross... It's totally coincidence it scans as a bolder version of the iOs photo app icon." @Gingiie0627 said that the logo "looks stupid".

Some users are in total support of the move. Designer Andy German praises the logo as nice. Twitter user @Andrew_Haine agrees, saying that when it comes to logos, "simplicity is everything!"

Aside from the logo design, the brand also makes changes on their mobile app. The app now features a simpler design that the brand claims to put more highlight on the photo and video content, in hopes to improve the app's navigation.

Instagram is a well-known photo-sharing site with over 80 million photo and video shares every day. Facebook bought the app in 2012 for a whopping amount of $1 billion.

At the end of the day, the logo does not matter. It is the service that the brand has and is still providing. Users hope for more years of content sharing with Instagram.
