Looks like fans will be getting more mutant-themed movies from the ever-expanding 'X-Men' franchise. 20th Century Fox has announced that a spinoff movie based on the standalone spinoff comic book series, 'The New Mutants,' is currently in the works.

Just like the comic book series, 'The New Mutants' will center on a team of new mutant characters apart from the ones belonging to the established 'X-Men' franchise.

The cast of characters comprise low-profile superheroes such as Cypher, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Wolfsbane and Magik, Deadline has learned.

Interestingly, in the comic books, Professor Xavier, Kitty Pryde, Deadpool and Magneto made cameo appearances. Does this mean the actors playing the aforesaid characters will also be part of this new movie?

No word on whether or not Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Ian McKellen, Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page and Ryan Reynolds are joining this new flick, but fans are expecting that the producers of 'The New Mutant' will stay true to the storyline presented in the comic book series.

Meanwhile, it was already revealed who is helming the upcoming film. 'Fault in Our Stars' director, Josh Boone, is reportedly taking the director's chair in this new project, reports Clevver News.

One of the producers of the film, Simon Kinberg recently gushed about 'The New Mutants' saying: "We're so excited to explore this new part of the 'X-Men' universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters."

While Fox has yet to confirm the release date of the upcoming movie, Design & Trend claims 'The New Mutant' is the mystery movie previously revealed to be scheduled for release on July 13, 2018.
