A week after all the demonstrations and protest against Hosni Mubarak's regime while the first round of presidential elections were going on in late May, the U.S. Department of State alerted U.S. Travelers and citizens living in Egypt about the chances of a second round of the elections that might take place June 16-17.

As scheduled the new President will not take charge of the office before June 30. Possibilities of Political rallies and demonstrations are very high in the period following the elections until the drafting of a new constitution. There were earlier incidents of clashes between police and protesters which turned violent resulting a number of deaths, major injuries and property damage.

According to the alert, most of the travel destinations including Luxor, Aswan and Red Sea Resorts continue to be peaceful than other parts of the country. The U.S. Department of State have asked American citizens to be vigilant about their personal security and stay alert to local security developments.

There have been cases of U.S. citizens getting arrested during protests. According to the Department of the State, it's highly recommended Americans not take part in the protest or rallies because foreigners could quickly become targets during the violence. U.S. citizens should not come to the Embassy during the demonstrations as the security forces might block the Embassy area and should always carry identification and any means of communication like cell phones.

Americans in an emergency might not need an appointment to visit the embassy, while the other routine American citizens will have to take appointment for assistance.
