Escape the hustle and the bustle of your busy life by running off to the mountains.  Breathe in the fresh air, explore trails, and take in the natural beauty of the mountains in the fall.  One of Georgia's "Natural Wonders" is the Amicalola Falls at the base of the Appalachian Trail in North Georgia.  Located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, Amicalola Falls is part of the state park system and is only a 90 minute drive from Atlanta, Georgia.

Amicalola Falls is the perfect place for those who enjoy the outdoors. There is no big town close by to distract you from the beauty of the forest. If you're looking for somewhere to lodge, there is a resort, the Amicalola Falls Lodge, that is attached to the state park.  If you enjoy camping, there are 25 camping sites in the state park. In addition, there are secluded cabin homes with full amenities that provide a full, rustic experience of a mountain get away!  The Lodge itself is located at the top of the park and offers a breathtaking view of the forest that it is nestled in.  Multiple programs are held through out the year that give information on the falls, the ecosystem, the history of the area, and other interesting outdoor subjects.

The falls themselves are the highest waterfall in the southeast at 729 feet high and are one of the tallest east of the Mississippi.  Visitors can walk down along side the falls on pre-set out trails and steps, if you are up to it as there are 475 "strenuous" steps down to the base.  Along the walk down there are many viewing areas to stop at and look down or up at the waterfall.  People can also drive down from the top to the bottom, but you miss out on the fully experiencing the waterfall.

Around the falls there are also an abundance of walking trails.  You can walk along the 2,175 miles Appalachian Trail, as the southern end of the trail begins here.  Don't forget to take a picture with the sign that says the trail starts here in order to prove to your friends that you have walked the Appalachian Trail!
