5. Almería, Andalusia

The setting: Much like a quaint version of Barcelona, this city has a vibrant blend of history and family-friendly attractions.

Things to do: Situated on the southern coast, Almería is only a short taxi ride to Cabo de Gata Natural Park, where you can explore over 60 km of pristine beaches, and still make it back to the city to enjoy the delicacies of the hundreds of tapas bars that are open all night. If you want to take a unique tour, El Cabo al Fondo will take you on an interactive adventure along the cliffs and caves of Cabo de Gata. Swimming and snorkeling off the boat is highly encouraged.

4. Cuenca, Cuenca

3. Gijón, Asturias

The setting: Born as a fishing village over 3,000 years ago, Gijón has transformed into a perfect destination for adventure seekers and families.

Things to do: Take a stroll through the Jardin Botanico (best May-October) and bring the kids- they will love the children's play garden and the surprise filled woodland walk. For those seeking a thrill, the Estación Náutica Gijón Costa Verde offers scuba diving, dolphin spotting, bungee jumping, and much more. Also be sure to check out the aquarium and play a round at one of the three local golf courses.

Where to eat: The idyllic city also knows how to have fun once the sun goes down. For those inclined to bar-hop and dance until sunrise, Capua-Náutico is a popular disco bar on the beach. For the wine connoisseurs, hop on a tour of La Ruta de Vinos -  a guided extravaganza of 10 of the best places to eat, drink, and mingle with locals.

2. Santiago de Compostela

1. Cádiz, Andalucia
The setting: In the heart of the Costa de la Luz, Cádiz lies in the southwest region of the country, not far from the coast of Africa. The city itself is a long, narrow island with miles of beach lining the western coast. As one of the oldest European settlements, Cádiz is rich in history and quite affordable for travelers. Quilla is a restaurant and café featuring a terrace just a few paces from the ocean. The menu is filled with vibrant, creative dishes that highlight the fresh local produce. Bar Manteca is a slightly grittier, authentic tapas bar run by an ex-matador. Filled with classic Spanish memorabilia and the best meats and cheeses, Bar Manteca is a wonderful place to experience if you need a quick bite after a day on the beach. Whichever beachfront tapas bar you choose, be sure to sample the gambas planchas (grilled shrimp) which are a local delicacy.
