The wreckage from the disastrous grounding of 7 destroyers in 1922, was one of the U.S. Navy's worst peacetime disasters. One of the ships came to rest near the wreck of the Yankee Blade, a bullion filled Gold Rush ship lost in 1854 along with hundreds of passengers, many of whom were taken to the bottom because of the gold dust carried in their pockets.
