Electric Car Roadtrip - Top Five Tips For Driving, Charging Electric Cars And Getting The Right Apps

Oct 27, 2016 05:52 AM EDT

Many people with electric cars are comfortable using their Teslas or LEAFs or Bolts for their everyday commute; however some are still worried when it comes to testing their environmentally-friendly cars on long road trips. Here are a few helpful tips for those who want to go on the roadtrip of a lifetime in their electric cars:

1. Choose an EV-friendly route

Some highway routes are being marketed as EV-friendly routes, known for having ample charging stops along the way. Take advantage of this and stick to these routes, instead of going for unknown roads. In addition, according to Green Car Reports, some electric cars come with a charger-locating app built in to the car's dashboard. For example, the Kia Soul EV shows the range left, charging time, and an arrow showing the distance and direction of the closest public charger.

2. Drive slow

Electric cars are efficient at lower speeds, with a gentle foot on the acceleration. Going at a slower, more constant speed lets drivers conserve range and allow for faster charging times per charging station. Clean Technica says that in this case, it is better to choose a slower route. Going slower saves more time than going fast and having to charge more often.

3. Download some Apps

Some of the most useful apps include ChargePoint, PlugShare and Greenlots. These nifty smartphone apps make it easy to plan trips, make stops and follow your car's range. Make sure your smartphone is also charged in order to use these apps.

4. Check if your car is compatible with CHAdeMO

CHAdeMO DC Fast Chargers can save a lot of time, as they speed up the recharge rate for electric vehicles. Check if your EV is compatible (Tesla and Kia Soul EV are compatible) and choose a route specifically featuring these equipment.

5. Be EV-courteous

Think of the next user, and neatly return the cord to the charger port. Keep in mind not to let your car stall while charging as other people may be in line and in need of a charge.
