A man died on a flight heading from Dallas to Orange County, California on Tuesday morning. The man went into full cardiac arrest on an American Airlines plane.

Crew members tried to save the passenger mid-flight but he was pronounced dead when the flight landed. The passenger was identified as John Selner, 78, of Fort Worth, Texas. by the county's coroner's office, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Jenny Wedge, a John Wayne Airport spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times that the crew members on the American Airlines flight told airport officials that there was a medical emergency on board at around 11:20 a.m. The crew members tried to give CPR to the man but stopped about 15 minutes before the flight landed at 11:45 a.m., Lt. Jeff Hallock, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department told the Times.

Once the plane landed, the passenger was brought to secure place in one of the airport terminals until officials from the coroner could arrive. No airport operations were affected by the incident.

It is typical for a flight's pilot or crew to notify local air traffic controllers about an in-flight medical emergency if the plane is close to the destination. Once air traffic controllers receive the message, they contact emergency personnel and airport operations staff members coordinate landings at specific locations at the airport. This is done so that first responders can board the plane as soon as possible to provide further medical aid.

Wedge said that airport emergency teams respond to medical emergencies almost daily and passengers can usually be treated or taken to a local hospital. "Unfortunately, that was not the case today," she told the Times.

While deats on flights are not common, they are not unhead of.
