The highly-anticipated series adaptation of the best-selling novel "Big Little Lies" finally premieres on HBO this week. Starring Award-winning actresses Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon plus many more, the seven-episode series opened straight away with a murder scene.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the first episode, "Somebody's Dead," opens up with the murder of a still unknown victim at an elementary school. The audience is then introduced to the main players, starting with Madeline Martha Mackenzie, played by actress Reese Witherspoon. She is undoubtedly the queen bee among the mothers in the private school where her children attend.

Early on she befriends Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), a single mother who just wants to survive. Madeline shows Jane ins and outs of their small Monterey town. The mom trio is completed by Nicole Kidman's character Celeste, who looks perfect from the outside, but who may be hiding the biggest secret of all.

All three are fighting with their secrets. Jane has flashbacks of her past, while Madeline struggles with the changes in her life, including her ex-husband who has come back with a much younger wife and new child.

Jane quickly gets on the wrong side of Renata Klein (Laura Dern) when the latter accuses Jane's son of choking her daughter. The parents are then asked to meet, and it is clear that she is out of place with all the rich parents. Not much else happens in the episode, as of course more of the conflict will come in later episodes.

Even though many readers of the novel already know the outcome, it would still be interesting to know how the events in the novel will be translated into the small screen. Deadline reports that that series premiere of "Big Little Lies" garnered a total of 2.1 million views.
