Unlike other shows which probably focused on the romance of the day for their Valentine's Day episode, "This is Us" instead focused on the not so beautiful parts of loving someone. In the past timeline, Jack discovers a secret Rebecca kept from him while the present timeline shows the uncertainty of Kate and Toby's relationship.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Kate was not really planning to cheat on Toby with Duke. Despite the fact that in last week's episode, Kate felt that Toby did not understand her goal in the camp, she never planned on cheating on him. In fact, when she went to Duke's cabin to give him a verbal smackdown, which results to her getting kicked out of camp. When she goes to Toby, their conversation takes a serious turn where they realize they don't really know much about each other yet.

Elsewhere, Kevin is going out with Sophie again, but the episode focused on his jitters before the show. He gets confidence from Miguel when the latter told him how much he resembles his father Jack. It boosts him enough to go and perform in his play. But that does not push through.

This is due to Randall, who is on his way to a nervous breakdown. Rebecca and Jack's adopted son has been going through so much that his hands are shaking due to the stress. He calls Randall to apologize for not making it to the play, but Randall instead goes to his brother to support him, leaving Sloane alone.

Meanwhile, TV Guide reports that the past timeline has Jack upset with Rebecca for not telling him that she and Ben actually dated in the past. Aside from that, Ben also told Jack that his wife never really wanted a family. Rebecca tells him that she just does not want him to be in the way of her dreams, which causes Jack to walk out and drink.
