With the 2017 BAFTA Awards happening before the 89th Academy Awards, the events that would transpire in this occasion may serve as a prelude to what will most likely emerge in the Oscars. Based on Gold Derby experts' BAFTAs predictions, Stone and Affleck lead the race with six out of seven nods, as well as Affleck. For the Best Director category, it is a unanimous decision among the experts for Damien Chazelle, while his musical-comedy "La La Land" receives six out of seven nods.

As of this writing, Stone has won in the recently held Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. Affleck, on the other hand, won in the Golden Globes in the drama category but lost to Denzel Washington ("Fences") at the SAG Awards.  Chazelle's musical masterpiece "La La Land" has bagged several awards including Best Picture (22nd Critics' Choice Awards) and Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Golden Globes).  It is also nominated for the Best Film category at the 2017 BAFTA Awards and Best Picture at the Oscars 2017.
