The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service is opening opportunities for pairs or couples to prove their relationship for six months. They will be assigned on a remote Maatsuyker Island with pay plus free accommodation.

Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service want to hire a caretaker for Maatsuyker Island. It is a 460-acre isle six miles from the south coast of Tasmania and is open to those with an established relationship who are able to work well together. The scope of duties for the vacancy, on Maatsuyker Island include basic land management and maintenance of a few buildings as well as observing sea and swell conditions and providing meteorological reports.

The successful applicants will work in Maatsuyker Island from September to March as soon as another pair takes over, cut off from the mainland, with helicopter departures only possible during an emergency. Telegraph reported that the hired couple will stay at the 19th-century light keeper's house complete with four bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a bathroom. There is no television or internet access and only one small fan heater for warmth in Maatsuyker Island.

In addition, the caretaking couple must provide their own food, clothing, entertainment and bedding. The transport space for the six months is restricted to 325kg per person on the flight out. There will be one resupply trip three months in, but a vegetable garden is available for fresh food on Maatsuyker Island.

The roles are also an opportunity to relish an extended stay on a sanctuary for flora and fauna. The Maatsuyker Island is a chosen important bird area and is part of the Southwest National Park and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site. Maatsuyker Island boasts penguins, fur seals, and the occasional elephant seal as well as petrels, silver gulls and sooty oystercatchers. There are four slots of six months available over the next two years for the job in Maatsuyker Island.
