The 1857 steamship sinking is considered one of America's worst maritime disasters. Now, from the wreck was discovered over 1,000 ounces of gold. This amount is reportedly the first to be recovered from the steamship after almost a quarter century.

Detroit News reports that the S.S. Central America was the name of steamship containing the sunken gold recovered off South Carolina Coast. The S.S. Central America was bringing the gold back from the California, unfortunately, it sank because of a hurricane. The hurricane claimed 425 lives, says reports. But not onIy did the hurricane take 425 lives, it was the reason the steamship containing the sunken gold recovered off South Carolina Coast sank and took about $50 million worth of gold.

The gold went to the bottom of the coast of South Carolina while aboard the 280-foot, side-wheel steamship. According to Newsmax, almost 1,000 ounces of the gold was recovered during a reconnaissance dive last month, as announced by Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa, Florida.

The sunken gold recovered off South Carolina Coast reportedly includes five gold bars and two $20 Double Eagle gold coins. The gold bars weigh between 106 and 344 ounces. One of the coins was even minted in San Francisco the year that the ship sank.

Mark Gordon, Odyssey's president and chief operating officer said, "While we weren't planning to recover gold so quickly, it did confirm that the site has not been disturbed since it was last visited in 1991 and there is gold remaining."

An expedition from North Charleston since April is anticipated to arrive about 160 miles off the coast until the late summer. Gordon added that in recent weeks the crew of 41 aboard the Odyssey Explorer has been conducting an extensive survey of the site and more golf will be added to the sunken gold recovered off South Carolina Coast this week once the expedition is completed.

There is no set number as to how much gold remains under the sea. According to Fox News, the ship was carrying gold bars shipped by banks and commercial interests. Passengers were also thought to be carrying f gold of their own. When summed up, these gold perhaps equals to the amount of the commercial shipment itself.
