Ever since the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, money and secretive resources are being continuously poured into national security projects at the behest of the public's ignorance.

The above teaser is from 'Top Secret America' a Frontline documentary resulting from more than two years of exhaustive research by Washington Post reporters Dana Priest and William Arkin. The project includes articles, interactive maps, graphics and databases, information on companies involved with Top Secret America, and much more.

The report reveals hundreds of departments and agencies operating out of 1,300 facilities across the nation managed by the nearly one million Americans with top-secret security clearances. The result is an enterprise so massive that nobody has a full understanding of it and whether is it actually fulfilling its declared purpose of protecting U.S. citizens from terror.

According to the report by the Washington Post, In Washington and the surrounding area, 33 building complexes for top-secret intelligence work are under construction or have been built since September 2001. Together they occupy the equivalent of almost three Pentagons or 22 U.S. Capitol buildings - about 17 million square feet of space. Most of these complexes are non descript office building with mega storage and office spaces underground.

The investigation is based on government documents and contracts, job descriptions, property records, corporate and social networking sites, and hundreds of interviews with intelligence, military and corporate officials.
As you can imagine,  most requested anonymity either because they are prohibited from speaking publicly or because, they said, they feared retaliation at work for voicing their concerns.
