Turkey is the crossroads of all things European and Asian. It's a place where the perfect marriage of the East and West is experienced through history, culture, food, its people and more. To be in Turkey is to literally be in two places at one time.

Istanbul is the nation's capital and representative of all that makes Turkey unique. While there are the astounding temples, museums and other mainstream attractions tourists shouldn't miss, there is the offbeat side of the city.

So while in Istanbul, here are some of the best off-track things to do and sights to see.

1. Let hamams pound you to tender bits.

Hamams are widely known as the iconic Turkish baths but foreigners are also widely intimidated by them. This is a place where travelers are instantly taken back to time during the Ottoman period, asked to be stripped down to wraps and be bathed, massaged and be pounded until one's body feels rejuvenated and ultimately relaxed. It's a unique experience every adventurous traveler needs to try, even Anthony Bourdain was talked into doing it.

2. See Nazi toys displayed in a museum.

In the Istanbul Toy Museum, visitors won't only see the usual Disney antique dolls or memorabilia, along with 4,000 other specimens. There are also Nazi action figurines tourists can both see and buy as souvenirs.

3. Go shopping to a whole new, massive level.

Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets. The bazaar has well over 4,000 shops, each offering a unique kind of something to take back home. Whether it's a mat, lamps, carpets, bags or more exotic finds, making a trip to the Grand Bazaar is a shopping experience unlike any other.

It's strongly advised that avid shoppers allot at least a whole day for this activity, as it will really take all the time one has.

4. Eat exotic street food.

It's easy to walk into a restaurant and be served kababs but a better experience is to taste one's way to Istanbul via the streets. Try out Kestane Kabap or roasted chestnuts, the best-known street snack in the land. Stuffed mussels, fish sandwiches and dried dates or figs are also a must try.

Turkey has a little something for everybody, even the most adventurous globetrotter will be left amazed and wanting more.
