McDonald's will now start serving a late-night value menu called After Midnight. This lets customers mix and match items including breakfast and regular menu items like the Egg McMuffin or Big Mac with hash browns.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the menu is available between midnight and 4 a.m and is available at 24-hour McDonalds in certain U.S. markets.

"Our customers want convenience around the clock," a statement from McDonald's said.

"Last summer the chain also tried out a more restricted menu, offering Breakfast After Midnight for customers it called "nocturnivores," according to Columbus Business First in Ohio. The menu is also offered in Southern California," reported The Chicago Tribune.

Other items on the menu include Egg White Delight McMuffin, oatmeal, hot cakes with sausage.

McDonald's is waking up to moonlight breakfast. Just not in the Windy City, at least not yet.

The Oak Brook-based chain is testing a late-night value menu called After Midnight that lets customers mix and match best-selling items from its breakfast and regular menus, like the Egg McMuffin or Big Mac, with hash browns or fries and coffee or a soda.

Breakfast items included in the test also include the sausage burrito, Egg White Delight McMuffin, oatmeal and hot cakes with sausage.

If the plan launches nationwide McDonald's will be the first major fast-food chain to have the program. Currently, Burger King doesn't offer a late-night breakfast but regional chains like Jack in the Box have had long-time breakfast menues.

BurgerBusiness.com reported that it has been hard for the chain to establish a system for preparing breakfast and lunch at the same time, despite the high demand.

"Other chains have struggled with restaurant security in the middle of the night, some of them limiting customer access to the drive-thru. A McDonald's spokeswoman Thursday said some of its restaurants do keep an open eating area during late-night hours, depending on the market," reported The Chicago Tribune.
