The bustling city-state of Hong Kong is at many people's bucket lists because of dazzling skyscrapers, efficient transport systems, traditional street markets, beautiful temples, food scene, and the lively cosmopolitan atmosphere. Take a trip to Ocean Park or Disneyland or try trekking the Dragonback Trail. A special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, the most densely-populated neighborhood in the world can be found here. Almost everyone speaks English so it is more convenient.

However, it is one of the more expensive destinations in the Southeast Asia, but it is possible not to break the bank. You just need smart planning and self-control.

1. Look up prices online and pre-book discounts.

Budget airlines decrease their rates for advance-booking promotions. Check discounts on tours, airport/city transfers, as well as sim card/Wi-Fi hotspots. Airfare comparison sites can show you the lowest fares. Booking online saves you time because you don't have to bring large amounts of cash in the airport and exchange currency.You need to book a flight at least eight to six weeks in advance.  Avoid booking from October to December and on the Chinese New Year. 2. Purchase an Octopus card.

This card is used to pay for transportation around the city, dining, entertainment, and shopping. Especially for travelers who use the MTR frequently, you will save plenty.

3. Book budget hotel rooms.

You can find hostels/guesthouses catering to low budget travelers, You can book budget hotel rooms for 325-650 HKD per night. You can also choose, ranging from hostels to mid-range options. Make sure to book early as cheaper-priced hotels with high reviews tend to get fully booked faster.

4. Cheap food

Cheap market food such as noodles and dumplings costs around 50 HKD per meal. Casual restaurants with table service costs around 100 HKD for a meal with a drink. Local options range from Dai Pai Dong's and cooked food centres, to Cha Cha Teng's.

5. Walk.

Save some bucks on transport by exploring the city on foot, because this colourful city is best experienced by exploring its streets.

6. Private airport transfer

If you are traveling in a group, getting a private airport transfer is cheaper than taking the public transportation. Just go to your pick-up point in the terminal and you'll be able to get to your hotel location. If you are traveling solo, book a coach transfer via Klook.

7. Ride the Star Ferry or the tram.

An adult fare on the tram is only $2.30. The MTR cost is double the amount. Or you can buy monthly MTR passes if you're staying in Hong Kong for a long time.

There is free WIFI offered in numerous establishments throughout Hong Kong. You can also use an inexpensive temporary SIM card for local calls.
