Every year, England celebrates pancake day or Shrove Tuesday, also known as pancake day, and today, February 12, 2013 is England's annual day to enjoy the sweet breakfast treat.

The day occurse 47 days before Easter Sunday. "Because the date of Easter Sunday is dictated by the cycles of the moon, Pancake Day can occur anytime between February 3 and March 9," reported Time Out London.

Shrove Tuesday marks the last day before lent, and traditionally, lent is a period of abstinance and is known for clearing cupboards of things such as eggs, sugar and fats, so things to make pancakes with.

In traditional English fashion, it's not enough to just eat them, they also have pancake races around London. Some pancake races across the UK are for fundraising and participants in the races have to toss pancakes in a frying pan while they compete the course.

One of the most famous in London is the Great Spitalfield's Pancake Race.

Allinlondon.com said about the race, "Bring your own frying pan and we'll provide the pancakes. The race will be run along Dray Walk at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane and all you have to do is toss the pancake a couple of times en route.

The heats will start at 12.30pm followed by the finals and the prize giving. The winners will receive a beautifully engraved - you've guessed it - frying pan! The best dressed team will also receive a prize. And there will be prizes for runners up and scrumptious pancakes for all entrants."

There is also a parliamentary pancake race for members of the house of parliamant. During the race the members of the house and members of the press race to raise funds and awareness for Rehab UK a brain injury charity. The race takes place ain the grounds of Victoria Tower Gardens in Westminster.

For those that don't want to race but would rather just eat, there are a number of restaurants in London offering up the breakfast treat.  Try The Breakfast Club, that has a number of locations around London for all day pancakes.
