BBC One's "Poldark" and ITV's "Victoria" are two of the most watched shows on television and have often left viewers amazed with their elaborate sets and gripping storylines. The two shows are now going to be competing against one another in the new period drama category in the TV equivalent of the Oscars: The National Television Awards Show.

Other shows that they will be going up against include Netflix's "Stranger Things", "Peaky Blinders", and "Call the Midwife." Poldark first premiered back in March 2015 and has been one of the highest rated shows on television and even managed to draw in an estimated 7 million viewers during its premiere episode, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Poldark" stars Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) as Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson (Jack the Giant Slayer) as Demelza Poldark and takes place in 18th century London, right around during the American War for Independence. It is a remake of the show that aired back in the 1970's and tells the story of a soldier, long presumed to be dead, who returns from war only to find his father has died and his estate left in complete disarray.

While the show continues to pull in very strong ratings, it has been edged out by "Victoria" by a very narrow margin. As reported by the Guardian, the royal drama won the ratings battle against "Poldark" by only 200,000 viewers.

Jenna Coleman of "Doctor Who" portrays Queen Victoria - a role that she did a lot of research on. The show has been renewed for a second season and will highlight the monarch's struggles as she tries to find balance between her role as the queen of England, and her duty to her family.

The 2017 National Television Awards will be broadcasted live from London's O2 Arena on January 25, 2017. Members of the public will only have until noon of January 25 to cast in their votes.
