Thanksgiving Day traditionally kicks off the "holiday season" in the United States. It is on November 24th or the fourth Thursday in November. Despite the exciting emotions which it brings, the season also comes with a little bit frustration to some travelers.

During this Thanksgiving holiday weekend, border wait times across Ontario are expected to be lengthy.

As a result, the Canada Border Services Agency has revealed a new application called as "CanBorder". The said app aims to help drivers check the latest border wait times. "Near Me" and "Favorites", two of the services available under the app, make it easy to locate and access information on ports of entry that are nearby, the agency shared.

According to Windsor Star, CBSA also recommends the use of NEXUS lanes or ensure each passenger has proper travel documents prior to arriving at the border crossing.

Likewise, the application helps to have receipts ready and be familiar with personal exemptions.

"If you are unsure whether the product is allowed, we recommend that you declare the item and speak to a border services officer if you have any questions," the agency said.

CBSA added that goods that are not declared are subject to seizure and penalties, and could lead to prosecution.

Moreover, importing one turkey or ten kilograms of turkey products for every person is permitted before special import permits are required and taxes applied.

Using the CanBorder app, one can plan ahead and make the most of your time on the road. Below are the following things a traveler can do as stated on CSBA wesite:

  •  Use border wait time data, geolocation and mapping services to help you have a better border      experience.
  •  Check current border wait times, or plan a trip based on forecasted wait times.
  •  Find ports of entry near you and save your favourites for quick access.
  •  Use the trip planner to provide turn-by-turn directions to the border
