5 Must Do Activities In Bali, Indonesia

Bali has evolved in recent years from its moniker of a surfer's paradise to one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. While there are still many cultural treasures and natural splendors to uncover on the tropical island, Bali now offers something for everyone.

Because Bali is famous for its beaches and naturally formed rock formations the Bukit Peninsula has become the go-to place for surfers of all levels to catch quality waves, Lonely Planet reports. There are several popular destinations that visitors can drive down the coast to; with Padang Padang, Bingin, and Dreamland being some of the most frequently surfed.

While on the beaches tourists can easily make way to Jukung for some Dolphin watching. The stunning black sand coastline is home dolphins who have been known to be very friendly, according to Stuff.co.nz. The best time to see these majestic animals would be around sunset just when the sun's last daylight hits the waves.

But the beaches are not the only attractions that Bali has to offer, the country is home to the famous Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud. These rice terraces are known worldwide because of their use of the traditional Balinese irrigation system called subak, the official Bali-Indonesia website reports.

Here in these rice terraces, visitors can get a firsthand look at the Balinese countryside, as well as the everyday life of the rice farmers. In some of the larger villages, there are authentic wood carvings done by the villagers for purchase at a small price.

While seeing the sprawling countryside and beautiful beaches are what attracts people to visit Bali, one of the most surprising things that make them come back is the booming restaurant and nightlife scene of the country, according to CNN. Bali has slowly become a hub for Asian Fusion inspired restaurants which take advantage of ever available fresh produce the country has to offer.

However, native food such as the babi guling (roasted suckling pig), is also a must-try for first-time visitors. Similar to the Filipino dish lechon, babi guling is a whole pig roasted over an open flame and marinated with spices local to Bali.

Lastly, for those who just want to get away and see Bali firsthand, it is always possible to rent a scooter and purchase a map and just take to the roads. Most tourist hubs in Bali have scooter rentals available and a day rental should not cost more than $50. Sometimes it is not the destination that is important but the journey itself.
