A sheriff in Ulster County, New York encourages residents to carry their firearms at all times in the wake of the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California and other gun rampages all over the world.

'In light of recent events that have occurred in the United States and around the world I want to encourage citizens of Ulster County who are licensed to carry a firearm to PLEASE DO SO,' Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum posted on the department's official Facebook page.

He added 'I urge you to responsibly take advantage of your legal right to carry a firearm. To ensure the safety of yourself and others, make sure you are comfortable and proficient with your weapon, and knowledgeable of the laws in New York State with regards to carrying a weapon and when it is legal to use it.'

Blarcum also requested police officers, both active and those who are no longer in service, to carry their guns at all times. He says that police officers are bound by their duty to keep the country safe and should be prepared to respond to such crises accordingly.

The Facebook post regarding carrying guns sparked a discussions with both sides having strong opinions. However, Blarcum assured that he was merely reminding people and police officers to be prepared for tough times and as long as they feel responsible and comfortable bringing their handguns.

The recent San Bernardino shooting in California last Wednesday as well as gun rampages all over the world triggered the sheriff to send out the request.

The San Bernardino attack took place in a social service centre with 14 people reported dead and 21 injured. The heavily-armed couple responsible for the rampage were identified as Syerf Farook, 28 (male) and Tashreen Malik, 27 (female). FBI says the investigation is ongoing and they have yet to find the motive for the attack.

President Barack Obama believes that the Dec 2 gun rampage is an opportunity for the country to push for firearms control measures.
