Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany.  The capital city, Luxembourg City, may be a small city, but there is a lot to explore.  Not to mention Luxembourg is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe despite its small size!

What most captivates visitors of the city is the gorge in which Historic Luxembourg is located.  This gorge runs through the middle of the city.  To cross from one side to the other both foot traffic and cars cross the Adolphe Bridge, a stone bridge built in 1896. For visitors, looking down from the bridge is breathtaking.  The vibrant green flora intermingles with the remnants of an ancient fort protecting the city, creating a whimsical place.  Once you cross the bridge you can walk down a path of your choosing to explore the gorge.  There are shaded stone paths covered in ivy.  There are several lookout spots in addition to caves to walk into.  These caves were once used as part of the fort that was built around the gorge to protect the Old Town.

Further down in the gorge is what is called the Old Town, the historic district of Luxembourg City.  One can walk through the ancient village peering into old churches, and gardens, or just follow the river, meandering through the village looking at the buildings.  You can also go through parts of the old fort on the hillside and look down into the valley.

The country also has its own royal family, which means that there is a palace to visit in the city!  It is known as the Palais Grand-Ducal.  Unlike, other grand palaces that stand out, this one blends into the surrounding architecture.  Only the marching guards outside give away the significance of the building.  Note to travelers though, the palace is only open for tours in August.  The tour is a must do if you are visiting at the right time as the guides give the history of Luxembourg.  Something not many of us are familiar with!

In addition Luxembourg City hosts several festivals and events throughout the year throughout the city. Different events include the salsa drum festival, book festivals, marathons, and seasonal events.  There is bound to be either a cultural or political or sporting event happening every month in this city.  After a long day of exploring the city, the many bakeries provided a wonderful atmosphere to relax and enjoy a tasty treat.
