In 1985, National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry snapped a picture of a young Afghan girl of 12-years old named Sharbat Gula, in the wake of the war in Afghanistan. Her picture, with her intense green eyes staring back, has become an icon and was an international wake-up call to the destruction of the Afghan war.
