Most people think about the Pacific or Atlantic when preparing vacations, but how about trying the Indian on for size?

Right now, the Indian Ocean is receiving a lot of negative publicity what with the Houdini aircraft and all. It's hard to think optimistically at such a time. However, this article will hopefully give you some reasons to.

Not as well-known as other places on this ocean are the Cocos/Keeling Islands. If you're seeking a quiet getaway, look no further. The West and Home Islands are perfect for a quick and self-meditative retreat. A collective population of both islands sums out right above 600 (Home containing the majority). Visitors can learn traditional arts like basket weaving by hand or jukong (which is a type of boat building). Given the title of moderate for both precipitation and temperature West and Home are good for enjoying usually colder holidays in a warm climate.

More recognized than those islands, yet still less visited than its neighbors, Mozambique is a steadily growing vacation spot. Tourism halted not too long ago, shortly after the country's civil war, but has been gaining momentum in the last two decades. There's something for almost everyone - from nature reserves for the animal-lover, to game reserves for the hunter, to parks and beautiful beaches for others in between. The climate is tropical with temperatures averaging from 55 to 90 degrees F and lower rainfall April through September.

Believe it or not, Christmas Island exists, and is the next destination on this list of Indian Ocean getaway spots. Happened-upon on Christmas Day (1643), the terraform was dubbed its fitting name. Tropical in climate, with temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees F and about 83 inches of yearly rainfall, it's no wonder the flora and fauna are the island's main attractions - being a once active volcano adds to the geography as well. Snorkeling alcoves to hiking the enormous national park of countless caves to swimming, fishing, and sunbathing can be done while on Christmas Island - it's like a natural theme park.

Go ahead, give the Indian Ocean another chance on these islands. They've been so patient - and so has your urge to get away.
