UK's major airports are currently crowded with thousands of passengers not because of the holiday season, but because of the technical problems pertaining to air traffic that led to the very unfortunate news of having many flights either delayed or cancelled.

Breaking Travel News reports that UK's air traffic control centre is facing a lot of technical problems as of late leading major airports to make the brave decision of cancelling some flights while others are apparently delayed.

Multiple sources noted that the technical problems at National Air Traffic Services' (NATS) control centre in Swanwich, Hampshire, have been the major factor in the delay of several flights of up to two hours while the fifth flights in Heathrow, Stansted and in Gatwick airports have been officially cancelled as early as now.

NATS authorities have already issued a statement earlier saying, "Due to a technical problem at Swanwick we are currently experiencing some difficulty switching from night-time to daytime operation. At night, when it's quiet, we can combine sectors of airspace. When it gets busy in the daytime we split the sectors out again. The voice communications system is configured to enable this to happen."

The statement also shed light on the technical problem the centre faced early morning. "We experienced a technical problem in the early hours of this morning, which means that it hasn't been possible to reconfigure the voice communications system to split out the sectors for the busier daytime traffic in some areas of the UK en route airspace."

However, NATS assured all of the passengers that they are doing their best to solve the issue right away. "Engineers are working to rectify the problem as soon as possible, but this is resulting in some delays. Safety has not been compromised at any time, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience being caused to passengers."

Local reports stated that the UK-bound flight affected by the technical problems are the once from Ireland and Europe.
