Few U.S. companies hire professors and experts as tour guides without accompanying the expertise with huge costs for travelers, however, the tradition of educational tours that are still affordable is still active in Great Britain, according to Frommers.

Andante Travels provides "Travels in Archaeology" of the ancient world, which lends itself to a wide range of different areas, including anthropology, classical literature and history. The company has been active since 1985.

The company's tours used to focus on Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, specifically near the Holy Land. Now, the company offers trips that span the entire world. They focus on trips to unique and often classical areas that are unlikely to be offered by an American travel company.

The "Ravenna and Aquileia" tour takes travelers to areas that focus on the Roman period, with a focus on the area around Po Valley in Italy.

Another trip that Andante offers is to Oman, the home of UNESCO World Heritage sites, with an archaeologist with an expertise in the Bronze Age to guide the trip.

In 2014, Andante will offer "A House Divided," a trip that covers American Civil War sights, including the Georgia POW camp at Andersonville, Richmond, Harper's Ferry, Gettysburg and Washington, D.C.

The tour company also offers comprehensive tours of Albania, a country covered by very few tour companies in the world. The country was a previously isolated and mountainous country that is still lagging behind much of Europe in its development.

Another remote trip is to the Australian Outback, where visitors will see indigenous rock art. That trip is led by an expert with a Ph.D. in prehistoric rock art.

Most tours employ several different expert guides. Some of them may also speak the native language of the area, as well as handling the day-to-day aspect of managing international travel. Other guides, however, are professors, lecturers and experts in the place or culture the group is traveling to.

Travel with Andante generally costs about $300 a day, including meals.
