A family from West Palm Beach, Florida, spent nine months planning a trip to visit all 50 states, including selling their home and belongings, according to NBC News.

Randy and Heidi Martin wanted to show the entire country to their children, Kristi and Kyle.

"Seeing all of America and seeing just how good people are in America, and the different regions and cultures of America," Heidi, 43, told NBC in an interview that aired on the "TODAY Show." "I just wanted them to see what it's founded on."

The couple took a sabbatical from their jobs for the trip, which began on June 10, 2012. The family traveled in a recreational vehicle, taking 13 months to complete their trip, ending on July 20 when they returned to Florida.

During the journey, the family traveled over 67,000 miles, traveling across the contiguous United States, as well as flying to Hawaii and sailing to their final destination, Alaska.

The kids attended school via online classes while the family stopped at historical sites, such as presidential libraries, sports venues, natural wonders and Disney World. They also visited the U.S. Capital and the U.S. Supreme Court, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Grand Canyon and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

"We got to learn a ton about politics, places I see in textbooks," Kyle said. "We got to cross the Mississippi, we got to actually go on battlefields George Washington walked."

The Martins discussed the many highlights of their trip, including Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Boston.

"Flying down into [the] Grand Canyon," Randy, 41, recalled as one of his best memories of the trip.

The family maintained a web site to document their trip called That Trip USA.

The couple has the assistance of several sponsors for their journey, which are listed on their web site. They say they spent about $264 a day on the trip.
