Traveling is an inherently wasteful endeavor: air or ground travel, going out to eat, getting room service during a hotel stay all increase carbon footprints and are tough on the wallet. But with the right planning and research beforehand, you can make your trip as green as possible, reports Gadling, these are a handful of ways to change up your next adventure with Earth's best interests at heart.

Pack Light

A lighter bag leads to a lighter plane, which means less fuel used to carry it. Additionally, you save money with no pesky overweight fees and waiting time at the baggage carousel. Remove any items you don't necessarily need-that fifth sweater stuffed into the suitcase can get the boot-and you can travel stress-free, knowing your load has been lightened.

Walk More

One of the best parts of traveling is the seeing the sights on foot, traversing new lands with nothing but two legs and a palate for adventure. It is good for both your body and the environment, and is the best way to catch glimpses of the tiny corners you might have missed while riding in a car. If a certain location is too far to walk, take public transportation instead.

No More Bottled Water

Often while on a trip, you forget to bring libations and therefore must stop at grocery stores or stands along the way to pick up a bottle of Poland Spring. No more, says Gadling. The environmental impact of using plastic bottles is detrimental and strong. Eschew those throwaways for reusable bottles.

Plan, Plan, Plan

Look for hotels and tours that offer green certifications-many companies offer water conservation programs, use fluorescent lighting or solar energy for power. Some hotels even feature local foods and sustainable agriculture. If you do your homework prior to the trip, you can help fund a worthy pursuit.
