A new initiative from the Downtown Project, called Project 100, is aiming to connect drivers with shared electric cars in Las Vegas. The project is pairing concern for access to a variety of transportation options with ecological concerns.

The project will include a fleet of 100 Tesla Model S electric cars for use by anyone who pays a monthly subscription fee.

It's a flexible subscription program, so customers can hire only a car, a car and a driver, a bike, or transportation by shuttle bus.

"We are excited to be partnering with Downtown Project and Project 100," Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla Motors said. "I am a big fan of their innovative efforts to help revitalize and transform downtown Vegas."

Users log onto the Project 100 app and type in their location. The app then reveals the nearest travel option available. The aim is for customers to get rid of their cars and replace them with Project 100 subscription services.

To make sure the program is reliable, the founders guarantee that a vehicle will be at the customer's location within 10 minutes of the request being entered into the app. The choice in transportation is intended to correlate the distance the person wants to travel with the type of transportation they need.

Someone living in the outer suburbs of Las Vegas who is traveling to the city center may be offered a Tesla while someone else looking to travel a short distance may be offered a bike that is better suited to their needs. It is designed to pair the customers needs with the nearest available transportation and provide the best option.

The company has just entered the beta testing phase and has not yet worked out pricing. They estimate that is will be approximately $400 a month. There will also be entry level membership options that provide a similar but "less robust level of service" for the occasional user. The testing will influence the different levels of service available as the project determines how people will use the system.
