Selena Gomez fell in love with the Jay Asher's novel "13 Reasons Why" that she decided to translate it into a film. The original plan was for her to play the role of Hanna Baker because she believes that the lead character's life realistically depicts her own life. However, young actress Catherine Langford played the role and her portrayal got the nods of the critics. Why did the "Good For You" actress turn down the role?

According to Just Jared Jr., The Weeknd's current girlfriend believes that the project can move her away from her Disney goody roles into a more serious actress and the film could be her vehicle for a transition. However, the "Same Old Love" singer decided that her presence in the film would only become a distraction. So she put her full support to Langford. Now, the project is one of Netflix's high-rated shows.

The 24-year-old singer said that Hanna's life resembles her own life when she was a teenager. She relates to her and wants every young girl who will watch the film will relate too. J-14 reported that Selena Gomez has been planning to make a movie out of the novel for seven years. But she ended up as one of the executive producers.

The film is about a rape victim who later took her own life and it is told from the point of view of the victim. A publication reported that it is the most realistic teen drama series to date. The film's storyline does not glorify rapists and violence but it was filmed in such a way that the victim's pain and agony were presented in the most realistic way. Aside from rape, it also tackles about bullying and the effects in the life of the victim.

Selena Gomez just offered a huge contribution in filmmaking. "13 Reasons Why" is a timely movie with a heart. It premiered on March 31 on Netflix and is currently being talked about in social media.
