One elderly Baldwin Michigan couple's stay at their Missouri vacation home ended tragically when burglars allegedly killed both of them, KSDK reported.

A neighbor, Jack Martin, told KSDK that he got the news on his answering machine.

"There were messages on my phone from Rick at Trace Hollow Resort," Martin said. "First message, it was looking like somebody was taking stuff out of the house like a burglar. I listened to the next message and he said, 'call me right away, something bad's happened.'"

The Stone County Sheriff's Office told Fox 17 News that at 5:43 p.m. on Thursday, deputies were dispatched to 1722 Trace Hollow Road for a robbery in progress. A neighbor had the two suspects at gunpoint until the deputies arrived, Fox 17 reported.

The deputies' investigation uncovered two dead bodies in the residence, according to Fox 17, and signs of foul play prompted further investigation. Stone County Sheriff's Office detectives and members of the Missouri Highway Patrol Division of Drug Control were on scene, Fox 17 reported.

Following the investigation, the crime was ruled a double homicide of the couple, Paul Brooks, 70, and Margaret Brooks, 69, Fox 17 reported.

The teenage suspects, 15 and 16 years old, were taken into custody and turned over to juvenile authorities, according to Fox 17.

The Stone County sheriff is not yet disclosing how the couple was killed, and the incident is still under investigation.

Martin only noticed burn marks on the rug in the house, but he could not detect any other signs.

"It doesn't make any sense that even a burglary would have to result in something like that," he told KSDK.
