People nowadays are getting sensitive on gender issues. Fluidity has become acceptable and now it is not only applicable to humans but to cats as well.

Garfield the Cat's gender has caused an internet war when an online satirist named Virgil Texas announced that the cat is "gender neutral." After which, he updated Garfield's Wikipedia page by changing the listed gender according to Huffington Post.

However, fans of the cat as a male did not just agree on the gender change and they also updated the Wikipedia page insisting on the already known gender.

The cat has been a male since it started. Texas based his actions on a Mental floss post quoted from an interview with creator Jim Davis saying that Garfield is neither a male of a female.

However, the Twitter post made by Texas got a lot of response from various social media accounts. There are those that insist that the famous character is a male. But many are not taking sides but commented on the time spent trying to debate on the gender issue.

One Twitter user wrote, "I can't believe people have this much time! "The debate over Garfield's gender caused quite a stir online." One user named Hunkie Junkie wrote, "you know it's time to get off Twitter for a while when people are debating the gender identity of Garfield." One exasperated user wrote that he is shocked not because Garfield is a male but on people debating about the issue.

Breitbart reported that because of the online debate that lasted for days, Jim Davis issued a statement to end the word war. He said that his feline creation is male and he has a love interest named Arlene.

He said that his words were taken out of context. What he said is that he always wanted to work with animals they have no particular gender, age, race or ethnicity and the humor he puts into the character could be enjoyed by a broader audience. After his clarification, the online war ceased. Now, it is clear that Garfield the Cat is a male.
