The world as we know today may be wrapped in our modern way of living, but some remnants of the planet's ancient civilizations still exist today. Around the world, ruins, temples, and other historic sites are still open for any history-curious traveler to see.

Are you one of those people? If so, here are some of the places you should visit at least once in your life to quench your historic curiosity:

Rock Fortress, Sri Lanka. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rock Fortress is one of the most iconic historical sites in the world. It is located between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane, and every year, tourists and history buffs mingle to witness the majestic fortress built by King Kasyapa during the 5th century. If you're into grand, abandoned historic palaces, then this is the place for you.

Machu Picchu, Peru. Located 7000 m above the sea level in the Andes plateau, Machu Picchu is one of the most popular historical sites in the world. Known as "The Lost Cities of The Incas", travelers can trek and follow the Inca trail and gaze upon the marvelous ancient engineering of the Incas. Their city of stone, it was built between 1300 and 1500 AD, yet no wheels or modern tools were used to build this ancient, majestic city.

Mayan Ruins, Mexico. The Mayan Ruins aren't confined to just one site, they are scattered all over Central America! If you want to get as much as historical tours as you want in one place, then you should visit the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, where sites such as Chetumal, Calakmul, and Bécan are located. In these sites you can find temple pyramids as old as 3000 years old!

Egypt. Notice that I haven't written a specific place to go to Egypt, because the whole country itself is a historical site. One of the most famous ancient civilizations in the world, they were around even before the biblical times! You will never tire of the amount of the ancient Egyptian sites still standing today, so if you want to take a glimpse of the lavish life of Ancient Egypt, then top sites to visit are The Pyramids of Giza, The Sphinx, The Temple of Horus and the Valley Of Kings.
