"League of Legends", "Dota 2", and "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" are unbeatable as the most watched games of 2016 on Twitch. Only a few games released last year made it to the list.

According to gaming website VG247, the popularity of games on Twitch may not be indicative of their sales performance. A bestselling game may not be a popular game to watch. The most watched games on Twitch, however, represent the games that hold the interest and attention of millions of players which is a sign of an active and loyal community of fans.

GitHyp is an analytics service which reported recently that the most played games on Steam last year were older games released before 2016. The data tracking website published another report that analyzes the results of the most watched games of the year on Twitch.

The report from GitHyp listed the top five games based on average viewers per hour. The top game with the highest average viewers per hour in 2016 was "League of Legends", followed by "CS:GO", "Dota 2", and then "Hearthstone" at fourth. All four games held the same position in 2015 making it the second straight year for the four games in the top five. It was also the second consecutive year that "League of Legends" was number 1.

The only game released in 2016 on this list was "Overwatch" at number 5. "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" and "Modern Warfare Remastered" did not do as well, reaching only the 19th and 21st places respectively.

According to the report, the list of games with the highest peak viewers in 2016 included only one game that was released in 2016, which was "Battlefield 1". The game did not reach its peak viewers after release but surprisingly during the livestream of its official reveal.

Overwatch was another bestselling new release but landed outside the top five at number 6. No Man's Sky managed to reach number 10 on the list of peak viewers but its viewer counts dropped bringing it down to the number 44 spot on the average viewers per hour chart.

In terms of highest peak viewers, the top game of 2016 this time was "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive", followed by "League of Legends" and then by "Dota 2" again in third place. All three games had the same position in the charts in 2015, making it the second consecutive year that they topped the charts, with "CS:GO" gaining the number one position for the second straight year. "Battlefield 1" and "Hearthstone" round out the top five at number 4 and 5 respectively.
